Method
- In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
- Add flour, salt, and butter. Stir until a rough dough forms.
- Knead dough on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes (or 5–6 minutes in a stand mixer) until smooth and elastic.
- Place dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
- Punch down dough and divide into 2 equal portions. Shape each portion into a loaf and place on a greased baking sheet.
- Cover and let rise again for 30–40 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped on the bottom.
- Cool slightly before slicing.
Notes
For a crispier crust, spray the oven with water before baking.
You can brush the loaves with an egg wash before baking for a shinier finish.
Bread can be frozen for up to 3 months; thaw and warm in the oven before serving.
