Soft Fluffy French Bread

Light, airy French bread with a soft texture and golden crust — perfect for sandwiches, toast, or enjoying fresh with butter.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups 500 g all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp instant yeast
  • cups 360 ml warm water
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter softened

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Wooden spoon or dough whisk
  • Baking sheet
  • Stand mixer with dough hook (optional)
  • Kitchen towel or plastic wrap

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add flour, salt, and butter. Stir until a rough dough forms.
  3. Knead dough on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes (or 5–6 minutes in a stand mixer) until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
  5. Punch down dough and divide into 2 equal portions. Shape each portion into a loaf and place on a greased baking sheet.
  6. Cover and let rise again for 30–40 minutes.
  7. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped on the bottom.
  9. Cool slightly before slicing.

Notes

For a crispier crust, spray the oven with water before baking.
You can brush the loaves with an egg wash before baking for a shinier finish.
Bread can be frozen for up to 3 months; thaw and warm in the oven before serving.
