Method
- In a large mixing bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
- Add flour, salt, and melted butter. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic (or 5–6 minutes in a stand mixer).
- Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise until doubled in size (about 1 hour).
- Punch down dough and knead in 1 cup of shredded cheese.
- Shape into a loaf and place in a greased loaf pan (or form into a round loaf on a baking sheet).
- Cover and let rise again for 30–40 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush loaf with beaten egg if desired, then sprinkle remaining ½ cup cheese on top.
- Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until golden and cooked through.
- Cool slightly before slicing.
Notes
Try mixing in herbs like rosemary, parsley, or chives for extra flavor.
Works well with a variety of cheeses — experiment with gouda, parmesan, or pepper jack.
Bread can be frozen after baking; reheat in the oven before serving.
