Ingredients

Pasta Ingredients
  • 12 ounces bowtie pasta (farfalle)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (15 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • to taste Salt and pepper
  • for garnish Fresh basil (optional)

Method

Cooking the Pasta
  1. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the bowtie pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside, reserving 1 cup of the pasta water.
Sautéing the Aromatics
  1. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook until it’s translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.
Making the Sauce
  1. Pour in the crushed tomatoes, and add dried oregano, red pepper flakes, salt, and pepper. Let it simmer for about 5-7 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together.
Combining Everything
  1. Stir in the cooked pasta and ricotta cheese. If the mixture looks dry, add a bit of the reserved pasta water until you achieve your desired consistency. Mix everything together over low heat for 2-3 minutes.
Adding Cheeses
  1. Sprinkle the mozzarella and Parmesan cheese over the pasta and stir gently until melted and combined.
Serving
  1. Spoon into bowls or a large serving dish. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if using. Enjoy your creamy Bowtie Pasta Ziti!

Notes

If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. When reheating, add a splash of water or broth to loosen the sauce. Also, feel free to swap out ingredients and customize the dish with your favorite vegetables.
