A Lowestoft couple has been banned from owning animals for the next 10 years after their dog, a miniature dachshund, had to be euthanized due to severe neglect.
The case centers around Duggy, a miniature dachshund, who was brought to a veterinary clinic by a concerned relative in December 2023 after showing signs of severe distress.
A Heartbreaking Discovery
Upon examination, Duggy was found in a critical state. He was barely conscious, with low blood pressure and hypothermia. The vet found him severely emaciated, with his ribs and pelvic bones clearly visible under his skin. The condition was so severe that the vet concluded Duggy would have been in immense pain due to the weight loss and poor health. Despite efforts to help, the decision was made to euthanize him to prevent further suffering.
Neglect and Consequences
Kelly Utting (37) and Daniel Kilty (42), both from Magnolia Court in Lowestoft, failed to attend Great Yarmouth Magistrates’ Court to face the charges against them. In their absence, both were found guilty of failing to provide adequate care for Duggy, resulting in his tragic death.
As a result of their neglect, the couple has been disqualified from owning any animals for the next 10 years. Additionally, they were each fined £1,100, ordered to pay £1,081 in court costs, and a victim surcharge of £440 was imposed.
Heartbreaking Investigation
RSPCA Inspector Emily Astillberry spoke out about the investigation, describing the images and video sent to her during the case. She said, “When I first saw the photos of Duggy, he was one of the thinnest dogs I had ever seen. His ribs and vertebrae were clearly visible, and his pelvic bones were sticking out beneath his skin. It was heartbreaking to see a dog in such a condition. This weight loss would not have happened overnight, and any responsible owner should have sought veterinary care much sooner.”
The Fallout of Neglect
As part of the court order, any animals remaining at Utting and Kilty’s home must either be rehomed or signed over to the RSPCA. If they fail to comply, the police will seize the animals. The couple’s failure to seek proper medical attention for Duggy ultimately led to his unnecessary suffering and death.
